Halte Hausdorff is the fascinating story of general practitioner David Hausdorff, a Jewish Rotterdammer who barely survived the Second World War as a person in hiding.

Hausdorff was born in 1901 into a prosperous Orthodox Jewish family. During his walks to the synagogue on the Boompjes, the young David saw old Rotterdam change rapidly. Not only did he witness the growth of the port, he also saw how the Zandstraatbuurt was demolished and the Coolsingel rose as a city boulevard.

In 1930, Hausdorff established himself as a general practitioner and moved into a building on the West-Kruiskade, where he would practice until well after the war. During his exciting life, Hausdorff came into contact with many striking figures: from local celebrities such as Branco van Dantzig and Rigardus Rijnhout – the 'Giant of Rotterdam' – to notorious Nazis, who became known after the war as the 'Breda Three'. The latter crossed his path when, as a doctor, he tried to save as many Jews as possible from deportation. That was all before he went into hiding with his family in 1943.

After the war, Hausdorff continued his practice and worked to rebuild the Jewish community. His faith was the only constant in his eventful life. Until his death, he continued to 'lernen', teach and write about Judaism.

For his work for the city and the Jewish community, Hausdorff was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1978. The title of this biography refers to the tram stop on the West-Kruiskade, which was popularly associated with the beloved family doctor for many years.
